Rockclimbing
Rockclimbing is a popular activity, and deservedly so! We run beginners
day trips at the start of each semester to teach basic abseiling and climbing
skills. These skills are built on as semester goes on, with trips to the
Blue Mountains, Warrumbungles, and other areas.
Locations
Some may think Newcastle an unusal place to get into rockclimbing, as
the closest decent cliffs are more than three hours drive away in the
Blue Mountains. However, there are quite a few options available
to the Newcastle climber, be it indoors or outdoors. There is bouldering
all around Port Stephens and at the local Cathedral Wall; big wall climbing
in the Warrumbungles National Park; sport climbing at Nowra; naturally
protected climbs at many locations in the Blue Mountains; and granite
slab climbing at Booroomba Rocks and Tarana.
Newcastle's home climbing location is Monkey Face in the Watagans State
Forest. Our indoor climbing is at either of the two remaining indoor
gyms in Newcastle: the Wall in Elermore Vale or the Forum on Campus.
Time of Activity
Good seasons for climbing are Autumn and Spring. Not too cold
that your fingertips freeze, or so hot that your sweat leaves a
snail trail up the cliff-line. |
