Biking big nellie
Steve Rogers August 1998

Seven cycles and seven cyclists in the Sports Union bus? Yep, it’s possible. That’s how we travelled to Matt’s home territory near Taree for a grand mountainbiking day out in August.

The ride, within Coopernook State Forest, was almost entirely on 4WD trails but this permitted crazy downhill speeds. (Ras clocked 72kph) We began at the lovely Vincent’s lookout and proceeded via several choice viewpoints to the summit of the spectacular volcanic plug called Big Nellie. For the final section we abandoned our bikes and clambered up hairy scary steep slabs (not easy to smear in SPD’s!) for the 360o panorama of coastline, inland valleys and lumpy mountain ranges.

Hooray! Another classic ride discovered.
