Beginners
canyoning
Summer 1999
Eighteen keen participants began the usual weekend pilgrimage down
to the Blue Mountains for some canyoning. Once again Glens
law failed and the thick overnight fog produced a drizzly morning.
Not to let a little water ruin the day we headed into Newnes State
Forest for some serious canyoning action. The mission for the first
day was Coachwood Canyon, exiting up the popular Rocky Creek Canyon.
After a bit of a bush bash (thanks for blazing a trail Mark) we
found ourselves on top of the first abseil. Forty metres down slippery
slimy rock! This provided a good challenge to the first time canyoners.
Fortunately all survived the abseil. Several more slippery slimy
abseils followed to provide plenty of challenges for the unwary.
With the worst of it behind us we headed up to Rocky Creek for the
usual jumps, slides, tumbles, and many laughs. Unfortunately the
water was a little to warm for the Norwegians (some winter canyons
maybe?)
The sunshine greeted us on Sunday morning and we all geared up for
the classic Hole in the Wall. No one got lost through the cave section,
although a few did get stuck. There was plenty of time during the
day for everyone to touch up on a few hacky skills. Overall the
weekend was a success. |
