Presidents
Report 2001
Steven Ahern
Having been given the gracious honor of preparing a second presidents
report, I would have thought that I'd be able to reprint the old
one. However, so much has happened since I sat down and wrote a
similar report a year ago. The same basic theme persists though.
From as much as 3 months in advance we dedicate our weekends to
the outdoors experiences we love so much. From the time that the
weekend is set nothing stands in the way of us getting there, even
if it comes down to a flurry of panic as we overload the cars with
gear and bodies and head off through the night.
Some huge personal achievements are made on club trips. Rob's rogainers
winning the Lake Macquarie Rogaine, Leif's mountainbiking and Adams
climbing are examples of some of the personal skills that the club
has. However it's the teamwork we experience and the friendships
we develop that are most outstanding in the club. Everyone is there
to seize the day in their own little way, but its our love of the
outdoors that unites us. The club runs on this passion to enjoy
the outdoors in one another's company. Massive efforts are made
to make sure that this happens but are done effortlessly because
its what we love to do.
The standard work behind the scenes in the gear shed has been done
exceptionally well, even in the event of Rob passing on much of
his responsibilities. Who would have thought it possible? Many thanks
go to the gear officers. Many thanks also go to the rest of the
committee for all their efforts, from preparing newsletters to budget
reports. Thank you also to the sports union for everything they
provide. The use of the Forum for climbing and the gear that they
provide is invaluable. Many thanks go the activity convenors and
anyone who helped in any way to the running of club trips. The result
has been many great outdoors adventures. We've had the standard
of climbing, canyoning, caving, walking, rogaining, MTBiking, XCSkiing,
kayaking, all right after a warm-up hacky sac, and finished with
a trangia meal. But this year has seen many other things happen.
The arrival of Waz on the scene saw the end of the standard trangia
meal, but he brought a lot more than that in his efforts to ensure
the smooth sailing of the club. Most notably were his efforts at
the club's stall at O'Week. Congratulations also on winning the
comfort challenge at the Bungles with the chocolate cake on the
camp oven. This year saw exceptional efforts from club members at
the Rockclimbing championships (Eastern Conference and National).
Not only did the competitors achieve very well, but the organising
of the event by club members was exceptional. Such inter-club activities
are a great experience. The club has gained a lot through the maintenance
of the club memberships in electronic format and the use of the
e-groups system of communication. The new face of the website is
also very impressive.
The training of club members in various activities has continued,
and hopefully will continue to do so. This will ensure the fun continues
at places like Kanangra, Bungonia, and Mount York. Hopefully the
beginner's days will continue to be as successful as they were this
year also. Thanks NUMC for another great year. Hopefully the next
one will be as good. Good luck to the new committee. Hope you can
keep up with the biggest and best club there is.
