Checklist
Day Trip
Basics
Food, water, comfortable daypack, map and compass, whistle, torch, toilet
paper, sunscreen and hat.
Clothing
Should include shorts, shirt, sturdy walking shoes, thick socks, warm
jumper and a rain jacket.
Optional extras
Camera, sketchpad, sunglasses, binoculars, pocket knife, compass and gaiters.
Overnight Trek
In addition to the day-walk equipment you should also take a tent, ground
sheet, sleeping bag, insulating mat, fuel stove (and pots), fuel, matches,
cutlery, a mug, a plate, a small towel, toiletries, and a torch.
Clothing should include long pants, thermals (if you have them), warm
hat, extra pairs of socks, spare shirts and shorts. Optional extras include
an inner sheet, a teddy bear, candles, mozzie repellent and a nice big
bottle of port.
Food
With a little imagination there is no reason why you cant eat better
than you do at home. A good idea is plenty of snack foods that are high
in energy (carbohydrates). Ive found bringing a little extra is
much better than not bringing enough and being hungry and out of energy.
This is also good if circumstances force you to spend an extra day outside
in an emergency.
Water
It is very important to drink enough water whilst outdoors. Without
it your body cant function properly. Water intake should also
increase with the level of exertion. The possible effects of not
enough water are dehydration, heat exhaustion, fatigue and cramps.
Water can make you day much more enjoyable. |
